Great Britten
A celebration of Benjamin Britten on the 50th anniversary of his passing.
Cantorum are delighted to be collaborating with St Paul’s Girls’ School, Hammersmith, for a performance of the cantata St Nicolas, which recounts vivid stories of the life of the legendary 4th century Bishop of Myra. Ben Alden (tenor) takes the part of St Nicolas, with Finn Miall as the young Nicolas. The accompaniment is provided by piano duet, organ, strings and percussion. We will also showcase other much loved works by Britten, including Rejoice in the Lamb and Hymn to St Cecilia.
Christmas with Cantorum
This event is now SOLD OUT
Join Cantorum Choir for a spellbinding journey of music and words spanning nearly two thousand years. Beginning with what is considered to be one of the oldest known Christmas carols from 336 AD, our festive concert interweaves readings from the great mediaeval spiritual thinkers and poets, with choral gems from Palestrina, Josquin des Pres, Gabrieli and Praetorius . Modern reimaginings follow, including the ever-popular Chilcott On Christmas Night, a selection of Will Todd Jazz Carols and, of course, carols for all the family. From simple Gregorian chant and devotional polyphony to joyous festive songs, this is a truly unique and uplifting celebration of the great mystery of Christmas.
Faire is the Rose
Step into the world of Orlando Gibbons — composer, courtier, and one of England’s most luminous musical voices. On the 400th anniversary of his death, this unique concert intertwines sacred anthems, madrigals, consort songs and viol music with the voice of Gibbons himself, brought to life by actor Richard Ritchie. In the splendour of Douai Abbey, the evening will showcase works by Orlando and Edward Gibbons, Byrd, Dowland, Ferrabosco, and the World Premiere of Tota pulchra es, a modern reimagining of Gibbons’ Faire is the Rose by Anthony Dowlatshahi. Cantorum are joined by international Grammy-nominated viol consort FRETWORK and star countertenor Tom Lilburn, for a journey through devotion, wit, melancholy, and splendour — culminating in The Silver Swan, his epitaph in music for a life woven in song.
